Trump Show Moves to Ramallah as Rumors of Deal Fly

Following Monday’s day-long exhibition of warmth and coziness between American and Israeli leaders, President Donald Trump and his envoys designated to take the point in brokering “the ultimate deal” moved to Bethlehem for meetings with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Palestinian officials. Trump has repeated his hope for achieving that deal, having promised the PA president that he will do anything it takes to make it happen. He reportedly told Israeli leaders that if they allow for progress with the Palestinians, the Arab world will “take steps” for Israel. Palestinians opposed to Trump and his plans for peace with Israel marched in protest and in observance of a “day of rage” declared as a symbol of opposition to Trump and his peace efforts. A new round of violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops is expected for Tuesday during the hours when the American president is in Bethlehem with Abbas. After the Bethlehem meeting, the president returns to Jerusalem to deliver the keynote speech of his visit to the region. Many are expecting to hear the high point of the presidential visit: minimally, an announcement that talks that have been dormant since 2014 when then-Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts collapsed, will be restarted under the aegis of President Trump and his designated peacemakers, son-in-law Jared Kushner and attorney Jason Greenblatt. Following the speech, the president leaves for the airport and his next stop: Rome.
