Clashes broke out between alcohol sellers and hard-line Salafi Muslims in Tunis, seriously wounding a police commander. Islam prohibits all alcohol consumption, and the Salafi Muslims attacked alcohol vendors in their small shops. Police intervened to stop the violence and a police commander was stabbed in the neck, leaving him in a critical condition. Last month, dozens of Salafis attacked a hotel because it was serving alcohol. Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring, has always been liberal and secular. After President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was overthrown by the popular uprising, Tunisia now has an elected Islamist-led government in a coalition with two non-religious parties.
