Turkey marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday by screening on its public television the Holocaust documentary, Shoah. It was the first time at a Muslim country screened the epic nine-hour documentary on its national media. Claude Lanzmann, the 87-year-old French director of Shoah, praised Turkey for the move.
“It is a historical event,” Lanzmann told the Associated Press. “It is extremely important that it is being shown in a Muslim country. The Turks are engaged in a pioneering work and I am sure it [the showing] will be followed by other Arab countries and one day by Iran.” The screening was part of the Paris-based Aladdin project that seeks to build greater understanding between Muslims and Jews. They have subtitled the film in Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
