Turkey Suspends Almost 13,000 Police Officers and Shuts TV Station

Turkish authorities suspended almost 13,000 police officers, including more than 2500 police chiefs, who they said were linked to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Turkey accuses of plotting an attempted coup in July. Turkey’s cabinet also approved a 90-day extension to the state of emergency, meaning that Turkish President Racep Taypip Erdogan can govern by decree until January. Since the July 15th attempted coup, Erdogan has suspended about 100,000 people in the military, civil service, police, judiciary and universities, accusing them of links with Gulen or of disloyalty. He has also shut down radio and TV stations. Turkish media said one of the policemen dismissed this week committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in a park.
