Turkey’s Erdogan Claims Local Election Victories Prove his Popularity

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is claiming that the results of the local elections held on Sunday are a referendum in support of his rule. The strong showing by Erdogan’s AKP party presented the platform from which the ruler for the past 12-years sounded Assad-esque in calling his political opponents “terrorists” and threatened to “enter their lair” while admonishing “they will pay the price; they will pay for this.” Erdogan has blamed his opponent, the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, for masterminding corruption charges against him. Erdogan responded to the charges by launching a purge of judges and prosecutors. The political unrest has fostered an economic upheaval with Turkish currency plunging and foreign investment drying up. The economy, though, appears to have already reacted positively to the strong showing by Erdogan’s AKP.
