Addressing Turkey’s Women’s Rights and Democracy Association one day before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that gender equality is contrary to nature. He said women should be treated equally by the law, but practically, they play a different role in society. “You can’t put a pickaxe and a shovel in their hand and get them to work…Our religion gave women a station, motherhood…You can’t tell this to feminists because they do not accept motherhood,” he said.
