In a well-publicized move aimed at easing tensions between Turkey’s military and its Islamist-dominated political world, the country’s new president, Abdullah Gul, met the chiefs of the army. The military has warned it will intervene if the Islamist Gul and the members of his ruling AK Party attempt to alter the secular nature of the state. Gul met the top commanders at the ceremony marking 85 years since a key victory over Greek forces, which, in part, led to the creation of modern Turkey.
