Turkey’s highest court decided on Wednesday that the ruling Justice and Development Party (the AKP) can remain operational but demanded it return half its official funding for 2007. The judges of the Constitutional Court were deeply divided as to whether the AKP has an Islamist agenda that contravenes the Turkish constitution. Since the creation of the modern secular Turkish state 90 years ago, the country has fought all attempts to push a religious platform, with the army leading several coups against Islamist politicians.
