The Turkish military said it killed between 145 to 160 Kurdish rebels in August with artillery fire and air strikes on suspected separatist targets. It said that as many as 100 were wounded. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) insisted that only three of its fighters had been killed, along with seven civilians, since the Turkish attacks began. The PKK is fighting for autonomy in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish region in the southeast and has been targeting military units in the rugged areas. Some of the Turkish attacks have been against PKK bases in northern Iraq.
