Turkish Military Targets PKK and YPG in Cross-Border Strikes

The Turkish military reported on Sunday that it had “neutralized” 17 individuals identified as “terrorists” during operations in northern Iraq and northern Syria. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, 15 members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were neutralized in northern Iraq, while a separate operation in the northern Syrian city of Manbij resulted in the neutralization of two members of the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The term “neutralized” is commonly used by Turkish officials to indicate that the individuals involved were either killed, captured, or surrendered.

The PKK, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish government. Turkey views the YPG as an extension of the PKK in Syria.

Turkey has been conducting cross-border military operations in both Iraq and Syria to eliminate PKK and YPG bases and hideouts.
