Senior Turkish military officials said that Turkish special forces entered northern Syria and are trying to open a passageway, but an overall ground incursion has not yet begun. The move comes after a suicide bomber, presumably from Islamic State (ISIS), killed at least 50 Turkish civilians at a wedding party earlier this week. Media reports said the bomber was a teenager, perhaps as young as 12 or 13. Turkey said it is trying to wipe out Islamic State from the Syrian border, to prevent future attacks. The spokesman said that Turkish artillery has hit 63 targets, and said the aim of the operation is to “ensure border security and Syria’s territorial integrity while supporting the US-led coalition against ISIS.”
