Turks Stage Mass Political Love-in in Aftermath of Coup; Issues Warrants for 42 Journalists

In the aftermath of the attempted coup that cost more than 200 lives and decimated the ranks of the military, academia and judiciary, the coup’s target, President Tayyip Recep Erdogan, and opposition parties staged a mass demonstration by pro-government and opposition political parties that included a rare moment for the opposition leader to have the spotlight. Filling Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square with members of all political parties under the banner of “Republic and Democracy.” Government officials have said that more than 13,000 were taken into custody following the coup, 8,800 of whom are members of the military. Amnesty International has said it has received credible reports that the detainees are subject to torture, beatings and rape. While Erdogan’s pan-political love fest was taking place, detention orders for 42 more journalists were handed down.
