Two Rockets Fired From Sinai Into Israel

Code red sirens rang out in southern Israel late last night as two rockets were fired into the area from the Sinai Peninsula, causing no injuries or damage. The Israeli army has not divulged who launched the missiles, although in the past such attacks—including similar incidents in April and May—have been attributed to a local affiliate of the Islamic State. The so-called Sinai Province has been engaged in a fierce insurgency against Egypt since elements of the al-Qa’ida-linked Ansar Bait al-Maqdis group declared allegiance to ISIS in 2014. It was not immediately clear if Israel was specifically targeted or whether the incoming rockets were the result of spillover from the fighting across the shared border between the terrorists and Egyptian troops. Earlier in the day, dozens of members of Sinai Province carried out coordinated attacks on multiple Egyptian military checkpoints, killing at least six soldiers. The ongoing violence has led to increased security coordination in the Peninsula between Jerusalem and Cairo, which has been permitted by Israel to significantly remilitarize the region despite clauses in the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries precluding this potentiality.
