Two Trump Envoys In The Region Trying To Restart Talks

Both Jason Greenblatt, President Trump’s lead international negotiator, and son-in-law/senior advisor Jared Kushner are meeting both the Israeli and Palestinian leaders this week in an effort to restart moribund peace talks. Jason Greenblatt meets today with senior Palestinian leaders and Kushner is coming tomorrow for just one day to meet both Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, both of whom will also hold a separate meeting with Greenblatt. According to the Jerusalem Post, Palestinian officials have warned the White House not to rush into “direct, indirect, or even proximity talks without a framework for a peace deal with Israel in mind. Greenblatt has made a good impression on both Israelis and Palestinians, but it is not clear if either the Israelis or the Palestinians are willing to make the compromises necessary for a peace deal. President Trump has said it is one of his priorities, and seems to be pursuing it despite a series of domestic challenges. Under President Obama, then US Secretary of State John Kerry shuttled frequently between Israeli and Palestinian officials without being able to make any real progress and some in Washington are concerned of a repeat scenario.
