U.N. Humanitarian Chief Blasts Israel for Use of Cluster Bombs

Calling it "shocking" and accusing Israel of "immoral behavior," U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland blasted its use of cluster bombs in the final 72-hours of its war against the Hizbullah. Speaking at a news conference at the United Nations in New York, Egeland said what was shocking and immoral is that "90 percent of the cluster bomb strikes occurred… when we knew there would be a resolution.” Israel’s army has in the past defended the use of the cluster bomb by saying it is a legal weapon that conforms with international standards. Yet, some reports from Lebanon indicate an inordinate number of individual bomblets failed to explode and are presenting a severe danger to Lebanese civilians.
