U.S. and Pakistan Trade Threats Over Al-Qa’ida Hunt

The Pakistani legislature’s Foreign Relations Committee chairman has told The Media Line that it would be a mistake for the United States to follow through on its threat to search for terrorists on Pakistani soil. On Saturday, Mushahid Hussein’s committee passed a resolution declaring that Pakistan’s cooperation with the international fight against terrorism will come to an abrupt end if the U.S. sends troops to do the job itself. "We feel that Pakistan has done more than the U.S., NATO and Britain in the campaign against terrorism, sacrificing nearly a thousand of its officers and soldiers and deploying 85,000 troops," Hussein said. The Pakistani reaction followed passage of legislation in the U.S. Congress on Friday that would tie American aid to Pakistan to the latter’s efforts to stop Al-Qa’ida and the Taliban operating in its territory.
