U.S.-Brokered Talks Between Israelis and Palestinians in Double Deadlock

Efforts by the Obama administration to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians appear to be mired in a double deadlock. The Palestinians have suspended all contact with Israel over the issue of Israeli building on land acquired in the 1967 war while American efforts to cajole – or according to some, “bribe” – Israel to extend a building freeze for 90-days has reached an impasse over terms of the White House’s package of incentives. Reports from Washington and Jerusalem indicate that clauses Prime Minister Netanyahu expected to see in the written draft from Washington – specifically about the promised 20 F-35 jet fighters – are still missing. Jerusalem is apparently still unclear on whether the planes are a gift and whether the aircraft will be delivered even if no agreement between Israel and the Palestinians is achieved. In Washington, the administration is reportedly still debating how far it can go in what it offers Israel in order to make the deal that Israel “can’t refuse.”
