George Mitchell, the United States’ new envoy charged with resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, will play a “vigorous” and “consistent” role, according to U.S. President Barack Obama. Mitchell arrives in the region on Tuesday, beginning his work in earnest with a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. From Cairo Mitchell will make stops in Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. The Obama administration says Mitchell will not be meeting with officials from Hamas even though they are in Cairo at the same time. Obama and his secretary of state, Hilary Clinton, have made it clear from day one that their intention is to play a far more hands-on role in the conflict than did their predecessors, said an analyst at The Media Line.
