U.S., EU Officials Set Date To Discuss Fate Of Iran Deal

American officials reportedly are set to hold discussions with European Union counterparts on the future of the Iran nuclear deal. The meeting, tentatively scheduled for March 15 in Berlin, comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he would re-impose sanctions on Iran this coming May after twice de-certifying Tehran’s compliance with the 2015 atomic agreement. In January, the American leader signed a sanctions waiver to keep the accord alive, but vowed not to do so again unless European countries worked with Washington to fix the pact’s “disastrous flaws.” In this respect, President Trump has pointed to the agreement’s so-called “sunset clauses” that remove restrictions on Tehran after narrow time frames, including limits on its ability to enrich uranium in just over a decade from now. The U.S. president also wants to forge a “follow-on” deal to address both Iran’s “nefarious” regional ambitions—manifest in its involvement in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen—as well as the Islamic Republic’s perceived flouting of a United Nations Security Council resolution related to its ballistic missile program.
