U.S. Livid Over Yemen’s Release of ‘USS Cole’ Bomber

American officials are livid over Yemen‘s release of a terrorist convicted in the attack of the USS Cole in 2000. Jamal al-Badawi was originally sentenced to death at his 2004 trial, but the sentence was later reduced to 15 years. In early 2006 he escaped from jail and two weeks ago turned himself in to Yemeni authorities. Apparently, in return for pledging support to the president of Yemen, his sentence has been reduced to virtual house arrest. Seventeen American sailors died in the attack on the Cole.
