In a rare and risky operation, U.S. helicopters swooped down into the middle of war-torn Somalia on Wednesday to rescue an American and a Dane being held hostage by pirates. Media reported that nine pirates were killed and five captured during a fireight with two teams of U.S. Navy Seals near the pirate haven of Haradheere. While U.S. and French forces have rescued pirate hostages at sea before now, raids on pirate bases inland are very unusual. The two people who were rescued, Jessica Buchanan and Poul Hagen Thisted, had been abducted in October while working on a project for the Danish De-Mining Group (DDG) in the semi-autonomous Galmudug region.
