The United States Senate passed a resolution on Wednesday warning that a Palestinian state must result from negotiations rather than unilateral action; and that each minister sitting in a unity government must “publicly accept Israel’s right to exist and all prior agreements” with the American and Israeli governments. H.Res.185 urges President Obama to “consider suspending assistance” to the Palestinian Authority “pending a review” of the Fatah-Hamas unity agreement. The measure warns that lawmakers will consider suspending aid to the P.A. if it persists “in efforts to circumvent direct negotiations by turning to the United Nations or other international bodies.” The non-binding resolution which was introduced by Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) was passed unanimously by voice vote of the 89 members present in the Senate chamber. A similar measure which has been offered in the House of Representatives by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) has amassed a comfortable majority of 289 cosponsors to date.
