U.S. Support for Israeli Missile System Seen as Pay-Back for Saudi Deal

Reports that the U.S. will fund Israeli development of the “David’s Sling” anti-missile defense system is being seen as the pay-back for not making waves to prevent the recently-announced $60 billion arms deal for Saudi Arabia. The Saudi deal, which will be the priciest in American history, comes perilously close to upsetting Israel’s technological edge in the regional arms balance according to experts. Nevertheless, the Israelis did not call for its friends in Congress to either protest or block the sale. Now comes word of the David’s Sling deal, which comes on the heels of a number of weapons deals between the U.S. and Israel. If not the Saudi sale, some say, it’s the carrot part of the carrot-and-stick handling of Israel in the current round of peace talks with the Palestinians.
