‘U.S. to Give Israel Real-Time Missile Detector’

With three of Israel’s senior government ministers in Washington, the Pentagon has reportedly decided to deliver to Israel a missile-detection system that operates in real time. The package uses microwave technology to detect and accurately pinpoint missiles. The handover is the result of a series of agreements between Washington and Jerusalem aimed at countering what they both call “the Iranian threat.” Shaul Mofaz, a former Israeli military chief of staff, who is now the minister responsible for the strategic partnership with the United States, is heading a delegation which includes security and intelligence chiefs and Israel’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, and its foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, are also in town. While Barak’s focus is also Iran, Livni is in the U.S. along with her Palestinian negotiating partner Ahmad Qurei’ to update U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the progress they have made.
