Six men have been convicted by the Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates of funding Taliban activities in Afghanistan and have received four year jail terms. An extra year was added to the sentences of two of the defendants who are Emiratis on a charge of attempting to establish an Islamist organization. The court did not reveal how much money was involved and did not say whether the funds were ever received by the Taliban. A total of eight men were arrested in the port city of Khor Fakkan in October 2008. All denied the charges which they insisted were uncorroborated and accused authorities of forcing confessions.
