Uber Goes Under in Israel

Despite its rapid growth and market satisfaction world-wide, Uber has been ordered by a court to halt business in Israel by Tuesday morning. The case that pulled the plug on the car share was brought by the Ministry of Transportation as part of its blowback against Uber operating in Israel in the first place, the ruling citing a lack of insurance as the reason for the decision to end the service immediately. The ministry’s position was that Uber’s drivers were unauthorized – read: unlicensed – which is illegal for both the driver of the vehicle and the passenger as well. The Uber defense was apparently insufficient to convince the court that the new company adapted its system to conform with Israeli law and administrative regulations. According to local media, Uber was doing well since entering the Israeli market — perhaps too well from the perspective of its competitors, licensed taxis.
