UN Ambassador Haley Vows to Defend Israel at World Body
United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley received sustained standing ovations when she told the assemblage at the convention of the pro-Israel lobby in Washington that “The days of Israel bashing are over.” Haley has quickly emerged as the new administration’s favorite among the pro-Israel community for her unequivocal statements in support of the Jewish state, her willingness to fight anti-Israel bias at the UN, and her frequent jibes aimed at the previous administration whose relationship with a large section of the Jewish community ended on a sour note when President Obama refused to veto a UN Security Council Resolution harshly critical of Israel. Haley is credited with playing a key role in convincing Secretary General Antonio Guterres to withdraw a report authored by a longtime critic of Israel that accused it of apartheid. Vice President Pence also addressed the AIPAC gathering to a warm reception. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu appeared via satellite and delivered a speech that accented only the positive in respect to what he expects from the new American administration. The PM was criticized for overdoing outreach to Trump while failing to focus on efforts to repair the perceived loss of support from the vast liberal sector of the American Jewish community that seems to be worsening.
