Israel’s UN ambassador has been elected to chair the United Nations Legal Committee, the body with responsibility for countering global terrorism. It marks the first time that the Jewish state’s envoy has been allowed to head a permanent UN committee since it entered the world body in 1949. Despite aggressive lobbying by the Palestinian representative to block the move, in a process that allows only “yea” votes, Israel received the approval of 109 nations. The chairmanship of the committee will be held by Ambassador Danny Danon, who, upon election, promised that as a world leader in the fight against terrorism, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to share our knowledge with the countries of the world.” The United States and European nations were credited with countering the efforts of Arab nations to prevent Danon’s election.
