UN General Assembly To Vote On U.S.-Drafted Resolution Condemning Hamas

The United Nations General Assembly was slated to vote Thursday on a U.S.-drafted resolution condemning the Palestinian terror group Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007. American Ambassador Nikki Haley, along with her Israeli counterpart Danny Danon, has been lobbying countries to vote in favor of the motion, which denounces Hamas “for repeatedly firing rockets into Israel and for inciting violence, thereby putting civilians at risk.” The resolution also demands that “other terrorist actors, including [the Iranian-backed] Islamic Jihad, cease all provocative actions and violent activity.” Notably, Washington has secured the support of the 28-member European Union and is now targeting various Asian, Latin American and African allies of Israel. “Countries must now ask themselves: Are they for or against Hamas’ violence? The choice is clear for the U.S.—we hope it will be for the rest of the UN as well,” Haley recently tweeted. Danon, meanwhile, predicted that “we will get a majority no matter what,” which would mark the first time the UNGA has censured Hamas’ aggression.
