The United Nations raised concerns on Wednesday over escalating violence in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, and the nearby Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that ongoing clashes have severely affected civilians, particularly in areas like Zamzam, where famine conditions have been confirmed. Humanitarian access to these regions remains highly restricted.
OCHA estimates that more than 500,000 displaced people are currently seeking shelter in the Zamzam camp. Despite the challenges, the UN and its humanitarian partners are making every effort to provide lifesaving aid to those in El Fasher, Greater Darfur, and across Sudan.
Since Sudan reopened its border with Chad in August, over 100 trucks carrying humanitarian supplies have crossed into the country through the Adre border crossing. Approximately two-thirds of these trucks delivered food and nutritional assistance, while others brought emergency shelter, medical aid, and supplies, benefiting more than 260,000 people.
The UN is continuing efforts to increase aid deliveries through the Adre and Tine crossings from Chad, as well as key routes from Port Sudan. OCHA stressed the importance of securing access across all necessary routes, both across borders and conflict lines, to combat famine and allow broader humanitarian action throughout Sudan.
