UN Security Council Hears Abbas Call for International Peace Effort then Walk Out on Israeli

Tuesday’s United Nations Security Council meeting, convened to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian track of Middle Eastern conflicts, quickly devolved into the “same-old-same-old” including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas issuing the PA’s demands and then walking out of the room before Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon could answer them. The walk-out – which took place in front of Trump Mideast peace envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt — prompted an angry rebuke from Danon, who declared, “Mr. Abbas, you have made it clear, with your words and with your actions that you are no longer part of the solution. You are the problem.” Before he left, Abbas demanded “an international peace conference by the middle of 2018 that will accept the State of Palestine as a full UN member.” Having declared the United States to be unfit to serve as an honest broker overseeing negotiations because of President Trump’s declaration that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital, Abbas has been traveling from nation to nation garnering support for an alternative to American leadership of the quest for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Before the Security Council, Abbas argued that “It is essential to establish a multilateral international mechanism emanating from an international conference.” Danon’s reproach turned personal when he addressed Abbas when Abbas was no longer in the room, asking, “What have you done to better the life of a single person in Ramallah or Gaza? They need leadership that will negotiate with Israel, speak to us, and not run away from dialogue.”
