Uncertain Impact on Israeli Government after Minister Quits over Sabbath Work on Rail System

The health minister in the Netanyahu cabinet has resigned his position because government-sanctioned work on a new rail system is being allowed to take place on the Sabbath in contravention of Jewish law. The actual impact is unclear because although Yaakov Litzman is relinquishing his post, his United Torah Judaism party is not withdrawing from the ruling coalition. But all of that could change when the Agudat Yisrael – the largest group in UTJ – meets with a withdrawal from the coalition on the table. If that happens, in addition to Litzman, a deputy minister and two members of parliament could also resign, plunging the government into a crisis that might only be resolved by calling new elections. The possibility of the crisis comes at a bad time for Prime Minister Netanyahu who is being investigated in several corruption scandals. Most believe that if an indictment is issued in any of those cases, the prime minister will have to step down.
