Unconfirmed: Israel will Allow Egypt to Deploy Aircraft to Patrol Sinai Border

According to an unconfirmed report that appeared on an Egyptian news website, Israel has agreed to allow patrol aircraft to be deployed along the Sinai Peninsula border as part of Egypt’s counter-terrorism efforts. According to the 1979 Camp David Accords, Israel has the right to sign-off on any change of military configuration set forth in the treaty. Jerusalem has already allowed the Egyptian military to make certain changes following intensified terrorist activity along the Israel-Egyptian border, including the use of tanks last month. A tank convoy was reportedly spotted at the northern edge of Sinai on Monday. While some within Israel’s military echelon are expressing concern that allowing abrogation of the treaty will lead to the proverbial “slippery slope,” the government is focused instead on allowing the new Egyptian government the leeway to demonstrate its determination to maintain law and order along the border.
