United Nations: Child Dies Every 10 Mins. In Yemen From Preventable Causes

According to UNICEF, the conflict in Yemen has created a “living hell” for children, with 1.8 million Yemenis under the age of five suffering from severe malnutrition and one youth dying every 10 minutes from treatable diseases. The revelation comes as fighting has intensified in the key rebel-held port city of Hodeida, despite a growing international chorus calling for an end to the war pitting Iranian-backed Shiite Houthis and a coalition of Sunni Gulf states. In this respect, United States Defense chief Jim Mattis and top diplomat Mike Pompeo last week both demanded a cessation of hostilities followed by the renewal within thirty days of long-stalled peace negotiations. It comes amid growing pressure on the Trump administration to withdraw its tactical support for the Riyadh-led military operation, especially in the aftermath of the killing last month of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Arab coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015, after the Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa and forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee the country.
