US, Israeli Leaders Anxious to Show Warmth and Friendship Reinforced by New Policy

Reports from Washington and Jerusalem underscore the obvious: President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu are anxious to demonstrate the warmth of their personal relationship to contrast eight stormy years of Obama-Netanyahu for reasons related to their respective political needs. Israeli media on Sunday was rife with speculation that the prime minister would travel to the United States even before his next scheduled trip in March – perhaps as soon as the first week in February. Image aside, the list of issues in which the two allies share interest includes the Trump campaign promises to “tear up” the Iranian nuclear agreement; to recognize Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem and move the US Embassy the Israeli capital; and counter-terrorism, including the fight against ISIS. A clear sign of the turn-about in US-Israeli relations in Jerusalem is the willingness by proponents of the pending controversial legislation to annex the post-1967 area of Ma’aleh Adumim to delay action on the bill until the Trump administration is ready to deal with the issue. Members of the Trump team have reportedly been in touch with the Netanyahu government during the transition period and have been clear in telling Jerusalem it doesn’t want any surprises. International voices are already warning the new president that fulfilling his campaign vow to move the embassy to Jerusalem will ignite violent reactions. Meanwhile, rumors of alternative ways to symbolically move the embassy without really doing so are rife in the public debate. As well, it has been reported in Israeli media that its intelligence services have warned against acting against the Iranian deal because negative fallout will be blamed on the Jewish state.
