US-Led Coalition Strike Kills 80 in Collateral Damage

Families of ISIS fighters became the apparently inadvertent targets for the US-led coalition on Friday when a municipal building in the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen was targeted for an air strike. The families had been taking refuge in the building when it was struck by the coalition, killing at least 80 non-combatants, including more than 30 children according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the fighting. The incident comes on the heels of a warning by the United Nations to avoid bombing areas where civilians are located. At least fifty others had been killed during fighting in Mayadeen on Wednesday and Thursday prompting the UN caution. Collateral damage has been the subject of investigation by the Pentagon in recent months. One investigation just concluded reported the deaths of some 352 civilians since March 2014 including 105 in a single incident in Mosul in March.
