William J. Burns, the US Under Secretary for Political Affairs, says the collective sanctions against Iran will cause Teheran to ultimately change its policy over its secretive nuclear program. Briefing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Burns said the collective sanctions, including those imposed by the UN and the follow-up actions by the US and Europe have left Iran increasingly isolated and vulnerable. Stuart Levey, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said voluntary actions by private companies to scale back legal business ties with Iran would help too.
