US Prefers to Defeat Rather Than Veto Latest Security Council Resolution

Kuwait’s latest attempt to orchestrate a Palestinian resolution in the United Nations Security Council could ultimately die of an American veto, but the Trump administration seemingly prefers to see the measure defeated for lack support. To that end, it needs to convince nine members of the Council to cast “no” votes. The Kuwaitis are seeking authorization for an international force to be deployed along the Israel-Gaza Strip border to “protect” Gazans from Israel. No mention is made of the Hamas governors of Gaza, listed by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist entity. UN-watchers are already predicting that killing the anti-Israel measure will require the American veto given current make-up of the Security Council, and go further, predicting that the Palestinians will then move the issue to the UN General Assembly – considered the Palestinians’ “home court” by many – where a similar resolution will overwhelmingly pass, but the measure will be toothless because unlike the Security Council, GA-resolutions are not binding. Israeli diplomats were reportedly most disappointed by the lack of support it is seeing from member-states of the European Union who are supporting condemnations of Israel without even referencing the actions of Hamas. In Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council condemned Israel by a vote of 29-2 for “the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force.”
