US-Russian Tension after Accidental American Strike on Syrian Soldiers

Tension soared between the United States and Russia on Saturday after American forces in Syria attacked Syrian soldiers mistakenly believed to be ISIS fighters. The US-led coalition bombed the area around Deir Al-Zour airport only to be informed by Russia that it had hit Syrian troops. The US suspended all bombing runs after learning of the error which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 80 Syrian soldiers according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. After the incident, Russian sources accused the US of defending ISIS forces. The US then accused the Russians of making too much out of the incident when Moscow called for a special session of the United Nations Security Council to take up the matter. Syria is asking the Security Council to condemn the US.
On the Golan Heights Saturday, an Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile unit successfully intercepted two rockets fired from Syria. It was the first time the Iron Dome had seen action on the Syrian border. The rockets were believed to have flown toward Israeli territory in error, and the army said the two missiles would have landed in Syrian territory if they had not been intercepted by Iron Dome.
