Iraqi officials say at least 58 people were killed and dozens wounded in what they believe was a coordinated wave of attacks on Shi’ite Muslim areas. They said gunmen detonated cars packed with explosives, suicide bombers and bombs at parking lots, outdoor markets and restaurants. There was no immediate claim of responsibility buy Iraqi analysts said they were similar to previous attacks by the Iraqi branch of Al-Qa’ida.
Violence has spiked in Iraq and thousands have been killed since April. It is the highest number of deaths since 2008 and raised fears that Iraq could sink back into a civil war based on ethnic and sectarian differences.
