Iraq’s first lady escaped harm when a car in her motorcade hit an improvised explosive device. Hiro Ibrahim Ahmad, the wife of President Jalal Talabani, was on her way to the National Theater when the attack occurred. Officials are unsure whether the first lady was actually the target, or whether any official motorcade would have sufficed for the attackers. Hiro Ibrahim owns a media group and is the daughter of one of the founders of Iraq’s Kurdish Democratic Party.
