Will Irony Play Out and Netanyahu Forced Out before Enjoying a Soul Mate in the White House?

In a region that’s no stranger to political irony and unexpected interruptions of what is believed – prematurely — to be political certainty, a growing number of Israelis from across the political spectrum see the storm clouds forming: Could Prime Minister Netanyahu be forced from office before enjoying the exalted feeling that must certainly come with the presence of a political soulmate in the Oval Office?  Despite having survived a number of would-be scandals and investigations during his long career, Netanyahu’s current corruption investigations won’t go away. In fact, as new evidence surfaces and those he’s charged with accepting favors from testify that the allegations about their roles in the affairs are, indeed, true, the odds-makers shorten the bet that “Bibi will fall.” Most recently, in the case in which the Netanyahu’s (Bibi and wife Sara) are accused of accepting cigars, champagne and jewelry worth tens of thousands of dollars from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan, it was revealed that Milchan testified that he did, indeed, make the gifts, but at the “demand” and “instruction” of the Netanyahus. Making matters grave for the first couple is knowledge that the prime minister had, at Milchan’s request, asked US Secretary of State John Kerry to intercede in order to obtain a 10-year work visa. In the other case, Netanyahu was taped by one of his own confidants discussing a deal with his arch nemesis newspaper owner Arnon Mozes by which a competing newspaper would be hobbled in return for positive coverage of Netanyahu leading up to the last election. Commentators not believing the twin cases will cost Netanyahu his job are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
