Women Candidates Perform Poorly in Kuwaiti Election

While Kuwait received widespread international praise for allowing women to vote and run as candidates in Thursday’s general election, initial results suggest females are trailing in virtually every district. The apparent failure of female candidates is in part because many women decided to vote the same way as their husbands and in at least one traditional district, tribal women urged their sisters to vote for male candidates, say The Media Line analysts. The first published results show positive news for the opposition reformists who persuaded Kuwait’s rulers the election needed to be brought forward by a year because of the slow pace of internal reforms.
