UN negotiator Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said that the two sides are “moving towards a general understanding that encompasses the expectations of the parties.” He said the discussions are “bringing us closer to a comprehensive agreement.” The civil war, between two factions that both claim to be Yemen’s true government, has killed an estimated 6500 people in the past year, half of them civilians. Iranian-backed Houthi forces control the capital Sana’a and are allied with forces loyal to the former Yemeni president Ali Abduallah Saleh, while troops loyal to the government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, backed by Saudi Arabia, has been based in the port city of Aden.
