Yemen Protestors Shelled in Sana’a; Two Dead on Tuesday

Violent protests raged into a third day in Yemen’s capital as government troops shelled demonstrators on Tuesday morning, killing at least two. The shelling and machine gun fire began before dawn with soldiers loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh squaring-off against anti-government forces joined by defectors from the army. The dynamic of two forces with military training and equipment elevates the level of violence and potential for death and destruction. The Reuters news agency reported that at least three missiles struck the demonstrators’ compound at 5 am. The death toll of those killed during the past two days stood at 56 before Tuesday’s casualties. Many were shot by snipers on roof-tops.
