Yemen Unrest Continues Despite Saleh Agreement

Nine demonstrators were shot and killed in Yemen’s capital city on Saturday despite an agreement signed last month by long-time strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh to leave the country. Troops led by Saleh’s son and nephew opened fire at demonstrators who were protesting terms of the pact which provided the ousted president with immunity from prosecution when they moved on his Sana’a compound. One report said at least 90 others were wounded by gunfire. Also on Saturday, Saleh said he would be leaving for the United States “to get away from cameras and allow the government to prepare for elections.” Saleh said he’d be away “for several days” and that he’d return, alluding to a political comeback. Fear of a civil war remains rife as does concern regarding the strategic positions held by Al-Qa’ida’s forces.
