Yemeni Jet Crashes, 153 Believed Lost

A passenger jet flown by Yemenia Air, Yemen’s state carrier, crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands on Monday night. The aircraft was an Airbus 310 flying from Sanaa to Moroni, the capital of Comoros. Airline officials say most of the passengers were either French or from Comoran. There were high winds reported at the time the plane was lost. One report said the plane aborted a landing and disappeared when it circled to try again. The first and last days of June have been marked by the crash of Airbus aircraft: Air France flight 447 which went down in the Atlantic killing 228 people and now the Yemenia Air flight. The cause of neither incident has been determined.
