The cholera epidemic that has been overwhelming Yemen for the past four months has now reached the level of 500,000 victims. Almost 2,000 of those afflicted with the disease have died according to the World Health Organization. Although virtually eradicated in developed nations, the civil war in Yemen has destroyed the nation’s sanitation and water infrastructures leaving the population at risk. Cholera can kill within a day when left untreated according to the WHO which is warning that the financial crisis is now feeding the medical one. Doctors and other aid workers have not been paid and the entire anti-cholera operation is in jeopardy of collapse.
