Yemen’s Hadi, after Escape from Capital, Challenges Shiite Houthis

A day after escaping from the capital city of Sana’a where he was being held under house arrest, Yemeni President Abd Rabbou Mansour Hadi assembled a meeting of governors in the southern port city of Aden and declared the ruling council established by the Houthis, the Shiite group that had taken control of Sana’a, “null and illegitimate.” Hadi had submitted his resignation during the period of house arrest but it was never approved or accepted by the parliament. In Aden, the governor of the province said Hadi “will keep up his political efforts to lead from Aden.” Hadi appears dedicated to the implementation of the recommendations of the National Dialogue which was assembled to chart a new government and future for Yemen. Analysts see Hadi’s escape and attack on the Houthis as a shift in momentum which has favored the Shiites since they began their assault on the capital last September.
