Yemen’s Internationally-recognized Legislature Meets for First Time Since Houthi Invasion

For the first time since the Shiite Houthis invaded the capital Sana’a in March 2015, President Abd Rabbo Monsour Hadi, Yemen’s internationally-recognized leader, has attended a session of parliament. The session took place in the eastern city of Sayoun on Friday. Hadi flew in from Riyadh where he is living in exile and 130 out of 301 legislators were able to attend the unusual session. The capital, Sana’a, remains under the control of the Iranian proxy Houthis. The southern port city of Aden has served as the capital-in-exile since the invasion, with many key leaders opting for the safety of the Saudi Arabian city. Between the Houthis’ devastating firepower and relentless shelling and air strikes carried out by a coalition of air forces led by the Saudis, the death toll stands in the tens of thousands while some 10 million face starvation.
